The Clock Tower stands on an elevated point in the Santa Maria do Castelo area, in the heart of Alcácer do Sal. Its strategic position offers a broad perspective over the town, encompassing its characteristic narrow streets and rooftops, and extending to the tranquil waters of the Sado River. This central and prominent location allows for a privileged observation of the surrounding landscape and the river's course, which historically was crucial for the locality's life.
Built in 1191, by order of the Almohad caliph Ya´qub al-Mansur, the Clock Tower initially had a crucial military function. Constructed in rammed earth, it served as a strategic lookout point over Alcácer do Sal's important river and ocean port. Its primary purpose was to defend this sector of the wall, and a family in charge of its protection resided there. After the Portuguese conquest in 1217, the tower maintained its military relevance for some time, witnessing the change of dominions and continuing its defense mission.
Over the centuries, the Clock Tower saw its functions evolve. At an undefined period in the early 14th century, it passed from the purview of the Order of Santiago to the administration of Alcácer do Sal's Municipal Council. Already in the early 17th century, around 1607, the tower housed the town's clock, an essential instrument for organizing daily life. Since then, it has been the discreet observer of the passage of time, marking the rhythm of life in Alcácer do Sal, witnessing the movement of generations, the work, and the intense commerce that unfolded by the river.
From its elevated position, the Clock Tower provides an encompassing panorama over Alcácer do Sal. The view reaches the town's nooks, with its characteristic buildings and the warm tones of the rooftops, contrasting with the green of the surrounding landscape. It is a place that invites contemplation of the riverside beauty and the expanse of the Sado River, offering an ideal setting for those seeking to appreciate local architecture and capture the essence of the Alentejo landscape.
