The Fonte Luminosa is located in the locality of Foz, a landmark in the municipality of Alcácer do Sal, within the district of Setúbal. More specifically, it is situated in the Laranjal neighborhood, occupying a public space that serves as an urban axis in this area.
Its presence invites a moment of pause and contemplation, harmoniously integrating into the journey of those exploring the locality of Foz, offering an open and easily accessible environment for all visitors.
This emblematic fountain was officially inaugurated on May 30, 1948, marking a work of notable relevance in the artistic and architectural landscape of the region. Its conception was the result of the collaboration of distinguished Portuguese artists of the time, who conferred upon it a lasting cultural and heritage value.
The sculptural figures that compose it are by Maximiano Alves and Diogo de Macedo, two prominent names in national sculpture, whose contributions elevated the ensemble to an artistic expression of significance.
The Fonte Luminosa transcends mere decorative function, presenting itself as an intricate artistic ensemble rich in symbolism. The bas-reliefs adorning the side panels were executed by Jorge Barradas, a master recognized for his expertise in ceramics and illustration.
In these panels, as well as in the entire sculptural ensemble, one can discern figures inspired by mythology, notably river nymphs. These representations evoke the region's deep connection to its waters and local reality, weaving a visual narrative that transports the observer to a classical imaginary and a sense of belonging to the surrounding natural environment.
