The Palácio dos Chavões is located in Quinta dos Chavões, in the parish of Vila Chã de Ourique, municipality of Cartaxo.
Considered one of the most remarkable manor houses in Ribatejo, it was originally built in the 14th century, around 1345.
In 1982, it was classified as a Property of Public Interest, recognizing its cultural and historical relevance.
In 1382, it was already known as "Casa dos Chavões" and belonged to Lourenço Gonçalves, who bequeathed it to the Church of Santo Estevão de Santarém. Later, it passed into private hands in the 15th century.
Rui Teles de Menezes, the owner at the time, remodeled the old medieval structure, converting it into a Mannerist manor house with a "U" configuration and a central courtyard. The main facade has similarities to that of Quinta das Torres, in Azeitão.
It was the setting for important meetings, including meetings related to the Restoration of Portugal's Independence in 1640. D. Pedro II was present at the site.
Between 1846 and 1848, under the order of the Marquis of Nisa, works were carried out on the lateral bodies and the rear facade, adopting elements of the neo-Gothic style.
The complex included a chapel dedicated to Santo Amaro, which was destroyed by a fire in 1909.
After centuries of alterations and abandonment, it was acquired in 1980, at a time when it was degraded and served as a sheep pen.
