Garças Island is located in the heart of the Ribatejo region, in the locality of Escaroupim, Salvaterra de Magos municipality. This river island is immersed in the tranquil waters of the Tagus River, approximately ten minutes by boat from Escaroupim pier. It is situated within a landscape dominated by the untouched nature of the riverbanks, characterized by a calm environment and a dense and varied flora, typical of this part of the river.
Garças Island is an important natural refuge, known for its significant bird population. During the spring and summer months, from March to August, the island becomes a privileged nesting site for hundreds of specimens of various species. The presence of birds such as the Squacco Heron, Glossy Ibis, Grey Heron, Little Egret, Cattle Egret, Night Heron, and Purple Heron is observed. In addition to these, the island hosts colonies of Sand Martins, Bee-eaters, Booted Eagles, and Black Kites, as well as recent sightings of Great Crested Grebes, whose presence has been increasing. The Tagus River, in this area, is fundamental for the survival of many species that find food and safe shelter here throughout the year.
The surroundings of Garças Island are an example of the natural beauty of the Tagus, where the banks are adorned with lush green, punctuated by willows, poplars, Japanese maples, and ash trees. The fresh and calm river water creates an environment of silence and serenity, inviting a deep contact with nature. Navigation through the secondary channels bordering the island allows for close observation of the aquatic vegetation, with bulrushes and cattails forming landscapes that can resemble more exotic sceneries. The tides, essential for riparian ecosystems, influence the landscape and the habitats of birds and fish, making each visit a unique experience. The landscape colors transform throughout the year, with an explosion of green in spring and warm hues of yellows, oranges, and reds in autumn.
