The Alpiarça Peat Bog is located in the eponymous locality, integrating into the landscape of the municipality of Alpiarça. This wetland, known as Paul da Gouxa, is crossed by the Ribeira do Vale de Atela, which contributes to its unique environment and the richness of its ecosystem. It is situated in an area that, although it may be close to local developments, maintains striking natural characteristics.
This site is a remarkable and unusual example of a low-altitude peat bog, of great importance for nature conservation, both nationally and European-wide. It extends over a considerable area, covering approximately 90 hectares, and is recognized for its uniqueness. Peat bogs are wetlands that accumulate organic matter over thousands of years, forming layers of peat, which makes them true natural archives of the past environment.
The depth of the peat layers present here is impressive, reaching about nine meters. This thickness reveals a carbon accumulation that has extended for approximately 9,000 years, with the peat bog functioning as a vast natural store. This capacity makes it a primary study site in the fight against climate change, as these formations play a fundamental role in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions.
There is ongoing scientific research dedicated to understanding and preserving this valuable ecosystem. Efforts are being made to optimize its role in carbon sequestration and ensure its long-term conservation. Habitat restoration and environmental education actions are planned, with the aim of valuing the peat bog and, eventually, classifying it as a Local Nature Reserve, ensuring its future and its importance for biodiversity and science.
