The Cineteatro Virgínia stands in the town of Torres Novas, located within the Salvador urbanization. The building is situated in an area of recent urban development, standing out in isolation in a square that serves as a public space. Its surroundings are marked by the proximity of the Almonda River, on its left bank, contributing to the landscape integration of the site within the city.
The history of Cineteatro Virgínia dates back to the mid-19th century, with a previous theatre built in 1842. However, the name that endures is a tribute to the Torres Novas actress Virgínia Dias da Silva (1850-1922), recognized for her talent and unique voice. This designation was attributed in 1895, perpetuating the memory of a significant figure in local performing arts.
The building seen today is the result of construction initiated in the 1950s, which replaced the already inadequate original structure. In 2001, the Torres Novas City Council acquired the space, which would be remodelled and reopened in 2005, ensuring its modernization and the continuity of its cultural vocation.
The Cineteatro Virgínia is a notable example of Modern Movement architecture. Its design is characterized by the articulation of cubic volumes and the visibility of the reinforced concrete structure on the facades and roofs. The main facade, oriented north, stands out with its convex and almost entirely glazed panel, giving it a distinct visual identity.
Inside, the space was designed with particular attention to its users. Visitors find spacious and welcoming lounge areas, such as the vast atrium and foyers, which are integrated into an inviting environment. The auditorium, with a rectangular plan, is distributed across a stalls area and two balconies, offering a capacity for over 700 spectators. The stage is equipped to host various productions, from theatrical plays to cinematographic projections, consolidating the Cineteatro Virgínia as a dynamic centre for shows and culture in Torres Novas.
