The Tower of Langalhão is located in the village of Casal Novo, part of the union of parishes of Areias and Pias, in Ferreira do Zêzere. Although situated in a rural and isolated area, on a small hill within Quinta do Tojal, its presence is discreet. Currently, the tower is partially enveloped by vegetation, which gives it an atmosphere of discovery and tranquility for those seeking vestiges of the past in harmony with nature.
This structure, also known as the Tower of Murta, has its deep roots in the medieval era. It originated as an atalaia, or military watchtower, essential for the defense of the region. It is known that as early as 1159 its walls were already damaged, during a period of land donation to the Order of the Temple. It was the Templars who later rebuilt and expanded it, transforming it into a more complex building. Over time, the tower lost its strategic defensive importance and, from the 15th century onwards, was adapted for a more pragmatic use, serving as a granary for the vast rural property where it is located.
The Tower of Langalhão, classified as a Public Interest Property, still reveals aspects of its original architecture today. With an irregular plan, it is possible to observe part of two robust and upright wall facades, built in limestone masonry. In these sections, one can note openings that attest to the existence of three interior floors, once supported by wooden beams. The arrow slits, narrow and rectilinear openings, recall its defensive function and allow one to imagine the watchmen who would observe the ancient paths from there.
Beyond its historical and architectural value, the Tower of Langalhão is also surrounded by a rich set of popular legends, some of which earned it names such as Tower of D. Guião or of the Thief Gaião. One of these stories tells of an alcaide (governor) of Santarém, named Gaião, known for his great strength and severity in applying justice. The popular narrative describes him as a giant who, from the tower, watched travelers with questionable intentions, until the day a confrontation with a small man resulted in a tragic outcome for both. These legends add a layer of mystery and fascination to this ancient site.
