Situated in the heart of Tomar's historic center, the Statue of Gualdim Pais stands in one of the city's most emblematic squares. This location offers a unique perspective on Tomar's urban and traditional environment, where local life unfolds amidst centuries-old buildings, in an area that connects the city's dynamism with its past. Its central position invites a pause to observe the surrounding atmosphere and characteristic architecture.
The statue honors Dom Gualdim Pais, one of the most significant and symbolic figures in the history of Tomar and the Knights Templar in Portugal. Born in the Braga region in 1118, he was a squire to Dom Afonso Henriques, fighting alongside the first Portuguese king. He received the title of knight after the Battle of Ourique in 1139. His dedication to the Order of the Temple took him to Palestine, where he remained for five years. Upon returning to Portugal in 1157, he assumed the position of Master of the Order of the Temple, a role he held for four decades, during which he founded the city of Tomar.
The monument, inaugurated on July 9, 1940, is the result of a creative process involving two artists. The initial model, approved in 1933, was conceived by Anjos Teixeira. After his death, Macário Dinis was the sculptor tasked with finalizing the work, introducing some adaptations that culminated in its public unveiling in 1940. The bronze statue depicts Dom Gualdim Pais as an imposing warrior, holding a shield and with his sword sheathed, and rests on a stone pedestal. This cylindrical pedestal features pillars with decorative pyramidal merlons, a detail that evokes the robust constructions erected by Gualdim Pais as a Templar master.
The Statue of Gualdim Pais is not merely an artistic representation; it is a landmark that personifies Tomar's identity and history. It symbolizes the city's deep connection to the Order of the Knights Templar and its founder, who shaped the locality's landscape and destiny. The monument serves as a constant reminder of the medieval legacy that still defines much of Tomar's character today, inviting reflection on its rich heritage.
