The Estau Arches are located in Tomar, in Praça Alves Redol, an area that invites observation of city life. Although situated in the area known as Quinta do Lima, their most striking presence is in the heart of Tomar's urban fabric, accessible and visible to anyone exploring the city. This unique site integrates into the daily landscape, offering a glimpse of history in the town centre.
This set of arches is what remains of a significant 15th-century building, originally known as the Estaus. Its construction was driven by Infante D. Henrique, with the aim of serving as a guesthouse. It was a vital point for accommodating merchants and travellers visiting Tomar, especially during its famous fairs. It also served as a resting place for the entourage of the Masters and friars of the Order of Christ, playing a fundamental role in the reception and movement of medieval Tomar.
The Estau Arches are notable for their aesthetics and their valuable architectural heritage. Their ogival arches stand out, characteristic elements of the Gothic style. Currently, some of these arches are integrated into the walls of a contemporary building, showing how urban evolution has preserved and incorporated traces of the past. Other arched segments, which belonged to a second part of the old building, emerge isolated in a small landscaped area nearby, inviting contemplation of what was once a vast structure for support and accommodation.
