The Cathedral of Santarém, known by its various denominations throughout time, is located in the Marvila area, in the heart of the city of Santarém. Its central location, within the historic urban fabric, gives it a prominent place and easy access for visitors to the city.
The history of this imposing building dates back to the 17th century. It was built on the site where the abandoned Alcáçova Nova Royal Palace once stood. The work was an initiative of the Society of Jesus to serve as a church for their college in the city, having been dedicated to Our Lady of Conception. Construction began in 1672 and continued until 1711, although the church was inaugurated for worship in 1687.
With the expulsion of the Jesuits from Portugal by the Marquis of Pombal, the building's use was altered. By donation from D. Maria I, it began to house the Patriarchal Seminary, a function it maintained until the 20th century. Its religious importance was re-emphasized in 1975, when the Diocese of Santarém was created and this temple was elevated to the dignity of a Cathedral.
The architecture of Santarém Cathedral reflects the period of its construction, combining artistic influences. The main facade exhibits a more restrained style, characteristic of Mannerism. However, the interior of the temple reveals the opulence and drama of the Baroque, visible in the decoration and structure of the altars and altarpieces. The project's conception is generally attributed to the architect Mateus do Couto.
The recognition of the historical and artistic importance of Santarém Cathedral is attested by its official classification. Since 1917, the building has been classified as a National Monument. This status highlights its exceptional value in the panorama of Portuguese built cultural heritage and its relevance to the city's history and identity.
