The Chapel of the Holy Spirit is located in the heart of the village of Sardoal, precisely in Praça da República (Republic Square). Its central position in the locality makes it easily accessible, integrated into the most bustling and historic environment of the settlement.
Although the date of 1603 is inscribed on the Chapel's portal, its construction actually dates back to the 16th century. The engraved date probably marks a period of significant renovation or restructuring works that the building underwent. This place is intrinsically linked to the ancient cult of the Holy Spirit, also known as the Festa do Bodo, a celebration of great relevance that has taken place in Sardoal since at least the year 1470. The importance of this tradition is attested by a letter-provision issued by D. Afonso V, which already at that time regulated the organization of the event and the concessions granted to the stewards, then designated as "emperors of the festival".
The Chapel of the Holy Spirit features an interior structure with a single nave, culminating in a chancel. The most notable element inside is the gilded carved altarpiece that adorns the chancel, with an evocative scene of Pentecost prominent at its center. Further below, one can admire a 16th-century sculpture of the Holy Trinity, carved in stone, whose style is reminiscent of the thrones of Guimarães, lending it a particular artistic interest. Externally, the building is characterized by its plastered and whitewashed facades, limestone frames, and a wooden portal. On one of the side facades, an azulejo panel, created in 1934 by Gabriel Constant, pays homage to Gil Vicente, enriching the architectural ensemble.
