The Chapel of Santa Ana (Saint Anne) is located in the town of Sardoal, on Rua 5 de Outubro. It is situated in the Santa Vitória and São Miguel area, in the heart of the village, allowing for easy discovery while strolling through its streets, naturally integrating into the local urban landscape.
Built in the 18th century, the Chapel of Santa Ana began as a private place of worship. Over time, its ownership changed hands, being donated to Canon Silva Martins, who, in turn, generously offered it to the Sardoal parish. This journey gives the chapel a history of transition and a legacy of sharing with the community.
The chapel features architecture with distinct details. On its facade, a triangular pediment stands out, rising above the main door. At the top of the building, decorative elements such as urns and a cross can be observed, lending it a unique aesthetic. The interior, with a single nave, has a wooden pulpit adorned with marbled patterns, located on the left side of the chancel, adding a touch of elegance to the space.
At the center of the chancel, there is a Rococo-style altarpiece, crafted from gilded wood with marbled finishes. This space houses the central image of Saint Anne, a representation of great curiosity: Saint Anne cradles the Virgin Mary, who in turn holds the Child Jesus in her arms. This particularity makes the chapel a point of reference for expectant mothers, who traditionally seek it out as a protector of pregnant women, the image being known as that of the "Holy Mothers".
The Chapel of Santa Ana is intrinsically linked to local traditions, especially during Holy Week and the Procession of the Steps. It features a niche that was used to display paintings alluding to the Passion, a practice that continues, with the piece currently placed at the entrance. This aspect underscores its cultural importance and relevance in the life of the community, inviting a moment of reflection and appreciation for the heritage.
