The Church of São Sebastião is situated within the urban area of São Sebastião, a parish that is an integral part of the city of Rio Maior, within the municipality of the same name. Its position allows it to be a landmark and a familiar element in the local landscape, easily accessible within the community's fabric.
This site has a history of devotion that dates back to ancient times, as the current church stands on what was once a hermitage. As early as the 18th century, the area was home to a confraternity dedicated to Saint Sebastian the Martyr, which evidences the long tradition of faith and the importance of the patron saint for the inhabitants. The building observable today was inaugurated on June 3, 1976, marking a distinct phase in the life and religious heritage of São Sebastião.
The architecture of the Church of São Sebastião reflects a postmodernist approach, evident in its design. The façade is notable for its geometric forms and simple lines, which give it a contemporary appearance harmonious with the surrounding environment. The interior of the church features a rectangular plan, clearly defining its space. A detail connecting the modern construction to its past is the presence of three columns that belonged to the original building, which were integrated and displayed, serving as a visible link between different eras.
Inside the Church of São Sebastião, visitors can appreciate several pieces of artistic and devotional interest. Of note is the polychrome image of Saint Sebastian, the patron saint of the church, which occupies a central place and is a focus of veneration for the community. Additionally, the church houses a remarkable medieval image of Our Lady with the Child Jesus on her lap, also polychrome, which offers a glimpse into sacred art of past centuries and enriches the temple's collection.
