This remarkable window is located in the heart of the historic centre of Santarém, more precisely at 12-13 Praça Sá da Bandeira. It is on the middle floor of a three-storey building, integrated into the city's characteristic urban fabric.
The window is a unique example of the Manueline style, a significant period in Portuguese art and architecture associated with the reign of King Manuel I. It is a work sculpted in limestone ashlar, showcasing the mastery and detail typical of this era.
Its decorative elements include trefoil arches and a distinct central column, which reveal a fusion of influences, from Portuguese to Mediterranean characteristics, notably the presence of Mudejar inspirations.
The building in which this window is set dates back to the 16th century, the golden age of the Manueline style. It is believed that this structure was associated with the old Royal Palace of Santarém, highlighting the site's historical importance to the city.
Given its architectural and historical relevance, the window is recognised as a highly valuable heritage asset. It has been classified as a Building of Public Interest since 1944, benefiting from legal protection aimed at its preservation and that of its urban surroundings.
Currently, the building that houses this Manueline window maintains its historic character on the upper floors, while the ground floor is used as a commercial space. This coexistence of uses allows the window to remain a living presence in the dynamics of Praça Sá da Bandeira.
