The Parish Church of São João Baptista (Saint John the Baptist) is located in Largo de São João, in the center of Abrantes, on an elevated churchyard with access stairs, offering a panoramic view of the city.
Founded in 1300 by Queen Saint Isabel, this church was transformed into a parish in 1326. In the late 16th century, it underwent a significant renovation, although some works remained unfinished.
The church is a good example of Mannerist architecture, with geometric shapes and elaborate stone details visible in the arches, columns, and main facade.
The interior of the church is impressive, with three naves and carved and gilded wooden altarpieces, representing scenes from the life of Christ. Noteworthy are also the colorful tiles and Renaissance stone pulpits.
The paved and elevated churchyard, with an old fountain, offers a serene environment and a good spot for taking photographs. It is an ideal place for those looking for a calm and historic space.
Although it is an important historical monument, the church needs urgent conservation interventions. In addition, the church is not open to the public regularly, and it is necessary to check the mass schedules or special events for a visit.
