The Church of Santa Maria do Castelo is located inside the Castle of Abrantes, in the upper part of the city, offering a dominant position over the Tagus valley. Situated in the former parish of São João, it is integrated into a fortified space that reveals centuries of history and provides ample views of the Ribatejo landscape.
The surrounding environment is marked by stone walls, towers, and nooks that evoke the city's medieval past, creating a historical setting that makes the visit particularly interesting for those who appreciate heritage and tranquility.
The foundation of this church dates back to the early 13th century, attributed to the reign of D. Afonso II, in the context of the Christian consolidation of the territory. In 1429, an earthquake destroyed a large part of the building, and it was rebuilt between 1433 and 1451 on the initiative of D. Diogo Fernandes de Almeida, alcaide-mor of Abrantes. In 1910, the complex was classified as a National Monument, highlighting its historical and artistic value.
With the extinction of religious orders in 1834, the church ceased to have a liturgical function and was adapted to house the D. Lopo de Almeida Museum, created in 1931. This exhibition space brings together pieces of sacred art, funerary sculpture, and decorative elements covering periods from Gothic to Baroque.
The building features a single nave with a wooden ceiling and combines different architectural styles, from Flamboyant Gothic to Mannerism. Inside, the original function as the burial place of the Almeida family stands out, with tombs of illustrious figures such as D. Lopo de Almeida, first Count of Abrantes, and D. Rodrigo Anes de Almeida Meneses, first Marquis of Abrantes and founding member of the Portuguese Royal Academy of History.
Among the most notable elements are the finely crafted funerary sculpture, side chapels with remnants of 17th-century tilework, and a collection of artistic pieces in stone, wood, and terracotta. During recent renovations, hidden frescoes were revealed in the main chapel, adding new layers of interest to the space.
Visiting the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo is an immersion into a space that combines the serenity of the location with the historical density of its walls. The atmosphere is silent and conducive to contemplation, inviting appreciation of both the architecture and the artistic details that mark centuries of Portuguese history.
The setting at the top of the castle also offers a unique landscape context, with views that complement the experience of encountering one of the most significant nuclei of Abrantes' heritage.
