The Fortress of Abrantes, also known as Abrantes Castle, stands imposingly at the highest point of the city of Abrantes, in the district of Santarém. The castle maintained its strategic relevance until more recent periods of history, such as the French Invasions, where its position was again decisive.
The Fortress of Abrantes is a remarkable example of military architecture that developed and adapted over several centuries. Although it currently stands in a state of consolidated ruin, it is possible to discern the robustness of its walls, built of stone, which once delimited the defensive perimeter. Elements such as the keep, although partially dismantled, bear witness to the grandeur and primary function of defense and vigilance of the complex.
The ruins allow visitors to visualize the organization of a medieval fortress, with its courtyards, strategic accesses, and the vestiges of the various constructive phases, which added and modified the structures according to the military needs of the time. Its constitution reflects the diversity of styles and construction techniques that succeeded one another, from the Romanesque period to later interventions.
