The Pillory of Tomar is located in Largo do Pelourinho, also called Várzea Pequena, in the parish of São João Baptista and Santa Maria dos Olivais, in the city of Tomar, district of Santarém.
It was recognized as a Property of Public Interest in 1933, being a symbol of the history and heritage of the city.
This pillory should not be confused with the Philippine Standard, which is located in Várzea Grande. The Philippine Standard recalls a decision by King Philip III of Spain in favor of the people of Tomar, in a conflict with the Order of Christ over the ownership of land.
Pillories, like this one in Tomar, were legal and administrative landmarks of the localities, representing municipal authority. They are also architectural memories of important historical periods.
Although not one of the most imposing, this pillory reflects the simplicity and functionality typical of structures with this purpose.
Largo do Pelourinho is easily accessible and allows visitors to explore other points of interest in the city of Tomar, such as the Convent of Christ and the historic center.
