The Vieira Guimarães House is harmoniously integrated into the historic centre of the city of Tomar. Situated on a pedestrian street, its location invites a peaceful exploration of the surroundings, particularly its proximity to the Old Bridge (Ponte Velha) and the banks of the Nabão River, which provide a scenic backdrop for the building and its environs.
Built between 1920 and 1922, the Vieira Guimarães House features an architecture with clear historicist references. Although it does not conform to the Manueline style, the building incorporates decorative elements that evoke past styles, in an eclecticism typical of its construction period. Noteworthy are the ornate details of the windows and its remarkable tower, whose aesthetic is inspired by that of the Church of São João Baptista, adding a distinctive character to its façade.
This remarkable property owes its existence and purpose to the physician and historian José Vieira da Silva Guimarães, who commissioned its construction and later donated it to the Tomar City Council for the express purpose of serving cultural ends. Currently, the ground floor of the house functions as an exhibition space, hosting various artistic and cultural events. The first floor, in turn, houses the headquarters of the Committee for the Festa dos Tabuleiros (Festival of the Trays), one of Tomar's most important and emblematic celebrations. Recognised as a Property of Municipal Interest, the Vieira Guimarães House not only preserves the memory of its benefactor but also stands as a dynamic hub in the city's cultural life.
