The Church of Mercy (Igreja da Misericórdia) is located in the heart of the city of Torres Novas, as part of the historic complex of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia. Its central position in the town of Torres Novas, in the district of Santarém, in the current parish of São Pedro, Lapas e Ribeira Branca, gives it a prominent role in the city's urban and cultural landscape.
The church's façade, accessible via an imposing Baroque-style staircase, invites visitors to discover its interior. Also noteworthy is a side entrance, adorned with a sculpted stone portal that is a remarkable example of late-Renaissance art. Inside, the visitor is enveloped in an atmosphere of artistic richness: the walls are almost entirely covered with 17th-century polychrome tiles, covering the space from floor to ceiling.
The ceiling, a wooden dome, is impressive for its decoration with ornate coffers. At the far end, the raised main altar, in gilded woodcarving, displays the exuberance of the Baroque style, with elaborate details that capture the eye.
The church's heritage includes a piece of great artistic relevance: a nativity scene of notable historical and cultural interest, attributed to the celebrated sculptor Machado de Castro, a central figure in 18th-century Portuguese art. This sculptural group underscores the artistic value of the church's collection.
Given its importance, the Church of Mercy of Torres Novas was classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1984, a recognition that highlights it as one of the most relevant monuments in the region and an essential stop for anyone interested in Portuguese history and sacred art.
