It is situated in one of the oldest areas of the village, harmoniously integrated among walls and houses that constitute its original urban fabric. It is positioned on the western edge of the historic center, inviting a stroll through narrow streets that still reflect the traditional layout of the place.

Historical Background

The history of the Council Fountain is centuries old, likely dating back to the 14th century, with a construction that evokes the Romanesque architectural tradition. Its existence is confirmed in old documents, namely in the "Parish Memories" of Samora Correia, dated 1758, where it was already mentioned. Later, in village plans from the late 18th century, the fountain continued to be a prominent element, testifying to its importance and longevity in the life of the community.

Architectural Elements

This example of local heritage stands out for its simplicity and functionality. The Council Fountain features a stone arch of proportionate dimensions, which frames the entrance. Its interior reveals a vaulted ceiling, built of brick, and a tank approximately seventy centimeters deep. Its aesthetic, devoid of elaborate ornaments, highlights the purity of its form and its original vocation as a public utility.

Legacy and Tradition

Beyond its practical function as a water supply point for the village residences, the Council Fountain was recognized for special characteristics. Popular traditions attributed therapeutic properties to its waters, which were considered beneficial for eyesight and, sometimes, for relieving kidney problems.
