Cais da Vala is located in the town of Salvaterra de Magos, within the area that inherited the same name, Cais da Vala. This point is situated at the end of the Vala Real, a waterway that connects Paul de Magos and flows into the vicinity of the Tagus River. Its position is central to the life of the town, marking one of its main historical accesses to the river.
For centuries, the Vala Real, to which this pier belongs, was one of Salvaterra de Magos' most important communication routes. It was here that the royal barges docked, facilitating the frequent displacements of the Royal Family to the town. This connection with the monarchy is the origin of the toponym "Real" (Royal) present in both the Vala and the pier, which in the past served as a stop for kings as well as an anchorage for fishermen.
The pier and the associated bridge are emblematic elements of Salvaterra de Magos. Although its origin is sometimes popularly attributed to the Roman period, this fact does not correspond to historical truth. The construction of the bridge, which complements the pier, probably dates back to the 17th century. 18th-century documents, such as the 1758 Geographical Dictionary of Portugal, already referred to this structure as the "bridge near the Village" (ponte ao pé da Vila), evidencing its antiquity and early importance in the region.
Currently, Cais da Vala is a place for leisure and contemplation, where one can enjoy the riverside landscape. It offers an inviting environment for a tranquil walk, allowing one to observe the serenity of the water and the natural surroundings. It is a space that invites relaxation and the appreciation of the history that the river and its banks tell.
