Known as "Mourões" or "Bridge of Boats," these 16 pillars were built between 1809 and 1811 to support an old bridge of boats that connected the banks of the Tagus River. This bridge facilitated the transport of people and goods, at a time when the river was an important trade route.
For years, it was believed that the pillars were vestiges of a Roman bridge, but studies confirmed their origin in the early 19th century, when they were built to support a military pier.
The pillars have a peculiar shape, with an "H" section and faces facing the river, functioning as breakwaters. Their design allowed them to support a ramp and a platform for boarding and disembarking, elements that have not survived to this day.
Since June 1970, the set of pillars has been classified as a Property of Public Interest, reinforcing its historical and heritage value.
Currently, the site is part of the Abrantes Riverside Urban Park, known as "Aquapolis," with modern structures that invite leisure and conviviality around the river.
Annually, in the Spring, the "Escapadinha dos Mourões" takes place, a camp organized by the scouts that brings together groups from all over the region.
