The Roman Villa of Rio Maior is located in the city and parish of Rio Maior, in the district of Santarém.
Since 2014, the site has been considered of Public Interest, reflecting its historical and cultural importance.
It was identified in the 19th century when a farmer found marble columns and fragments of mosaics while working in the field.
The main archaeological works took place between 1995 and 1999, revealing an urban area of the villa of about 772 square meters.
It includes corridors, rooms, and apses, with floors decorated with colorful mosaics, typical of the Roman period.
Objects such as fragments of ceramics from Hispania and Africa, ancient coins, and small bronze pieces help to situate the villa in the period of the Late Roman Empire (3rd to 5th centuries).
It is a place that offers a fascinating perspective on the Roman presence in the region and the architectural and cultural richness of this historical period.
