It is located on the eastern slope of the Serra dos Candeeiros, near the road that connects Rio Maior to Caldas da Rainha. To arrive, it is recommended to turn right after the Chapel of Senhora da Luz and follow a dirt road to the left.
The cave is a testament to the long history of habitation in Rio Maior, with vestiges dating back to the Upper Paleolithic and Chalcolithic periods. Burials, chipped and polished stone tools, bone utensils, and ceramics have been discovered.
The objects found include axes, daggers, arrowheads, perforators, ornaments, and symbolic artifacts such as cylinders and limestone vases. Much of the collection is preserved at the National Museum of Archaeology in Lisbon.
The cave is about 150 meters long and is composed of several rooms and corridors. Some areas have impressive limestone formations that enrich the visit.
Despite being classified as a National Monument since 1934, the cave lacks adequate protection and defined access. The site deserves greater preservation to prevent damage to the natural and cultural heritage.
Anyone exploring the cave should respect the site, avoiding touching or damaging the limestone formations and the surrounding environment. There is no signage or tourist infrastructure.
Classified as a National Monument, the cave is recognized for its archaeological relevance, but it needs attention to avoid degradation and promote its appreciation.
