Porto das Mulheres is located on the left bank of the Tagus River, a few meters from the village of Chamusca. Its position offers a wide perspective over the river and the surrounding Ribatejo landscape, with the village extending into the more distant hills. It is a place situated in close proximity to Chamusca's urban center, integrating into its riverine area.

History and Toponymy

In times past, before the advent of rail and road transport, this place was an important river port. It played a vital role in the transport of various goods, such as cork, wine, horticultural products, and straw, as well as people and animals, via the "upriver boats" that traversed the Tagus. The name "Porto das Mulheres" (Women's Port) is a reminder of its historical function, as it was here that the women of the region gathered to wash clothes. This space was also, until the last century, a place of residence for the Avieiro communities.

River Leisure Area

Currently, Porto das Mulheres has transformed into a pleasant leisure area and a river bathing zone. Characterized by an extensive sandy area, it offers waters that can be calm and suitable for bathing near the shore, always with attention to the main current. It is an inviting place for moments of tranquility, where one can gather clams, fish, or simply relax by the river. The presence of various birds also makes it a point of interest for those who enjoy observing wildlife.

Routes and Natural Surroundings

The Porto das Mulheres area is connected to a path that follows a dike, sometimes referred to as "Tapadão" or Dike of Nossa Senhora das Dores. This path offers a relaxing landscape of green fields and riverbanks, ideal for walks. Along this route, one can find outdoor exercise equipment, allowing visitors to combine their stroll with some physical activity. The natural surroundings of this place provide a serene environment, with views that invite contemplation of the Tagus and its rural landscape.
