The Coadouro Bridge stands in the locality of Penhascoso, within the municipality of Mação. It is immersed in a predominantly natural landscape, crossing a watercourse. This position provides a serene setting, allowing visitors to appreciate the beauty of the surrounding riverside and rural environment, far from the hustle and bustle.
Considered a remarkable testament to ancient engineering, the Coadouro Bridge dates back to a period between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD. Its millennial construction reveals the technical capacity of its creators, remaining as a passage structure and a historical landmark that spans centuries, connecting not only banks but also different eras.
The bridge is characterized by its robust composition of three arches. The central arch features a larger dimension and elevation than the two lateral arches, which are identical in size. The bridge deck is straight and flanked by solid parapets. Observing the bases of the pillars, it is possible to identify the conical cutwaters, structural elements that served to direct the water flow and protect the bridge from its force.
The site of the Coadouro Bridge offers an environment of quietude and contemplation. Its integration into the natural landscape, with the presence of water and surrounding vegetation, creates a captivating setting for a leisurely stop. This tranquil setting allows visitors to enjoy the harmony between the ancient human construction and the serenity of the environment.
