The Mira-Minde Polje is located in the town of Minde, in the municipality of Alcanena. Situated in the heart of the Serras de Aire e Candeeiros Natural Park, this site is positioned at an altitude of approximately 200 meters, nestled between the Serra de Santo António and the Serra de Aire.
It is an area of peculiar natural beauty, shaped by the region's geographical characteristics, known for its tranquil and embracing environment, which invites contemplation of the landscape.
The Mira-Minde Polje is a depression with a remarkably flat bottom, typical of limestone regions. Its formation results from a natural phenomenon where several watercourses disappear into the ground, giving rise to temporary springs. It is considered the largest of its kind in the region, extending for approximately 4000 meters in length and reaching about 1800 meters at its maximum width.
This site represents an exceptional example of a karstic landscape, a true geological monument that stands out for its uniqueness and the way it interacts with the dynamics of the seasons.
The most fascinating characteristic of the Mira-Minde Polje is its seasonal metamorphosis. In the wettest winters, the depression transforms into a vast temporary lake, a natural spectacle that the local population affectionately calls the Minde sea. At this time, the water can reach considerable depths, sometimes up to eight meters.
However, with the arrival of summer, the water evaporates completely. The landscape then reveals its dry bed, where one can observe, for example, the region's olive grove, demonstrating the adaptability of local flora to this unique hydrological cycle.
The alternation between the presence and absence of water creates a unique ecosystem that supports a rich diversity of wildlife. During the winter months, when the polje fills up, it becomes a refuge for various aquatic birds, such as the mallard, the common moorhen, and the Eurasian coot, which find food and shelter here.
When the bed dries in summer, the polje continues to be vital for other bird species, including the stonechat, the meadow pipit, and the imposing short-toed snake eagle. This dynamic ensures the protection and enhancement of rare flora and fauna, underscoring the importance of this site for biodiversity conservation.
