The Church of Santa Maria is located in the peaceful village of Pinheiro Grande, which is part of the municipality of Chamusca. It is situated on Travessa da Pereira, occupying a central position within the inhabited area of the village.
The building of the Church of Santa Maria, which can be seen today in Pinheiro Grande, has a clearly defined temporal origin. Its construction dates back to the 1930s. However, this temple was not the first to exist on this site. It was erected precisely on the same spot where an older church, known in the community as the 'Old Church', once stood.
The decision and need to build the current church resulted from a significant event in local history. The old 'Old Church', which served the population for years, was consumed by a large fire. This dramatic event occurred on a symbolic date, Epiphany, on January 6, 1921. It was after this destruction that the construction of the new temple proceeded on the same site, ensuring the spiritual continuity of the Pinheiro Grande community.
