Located in Pedreira, in the municipality of Tomar, Casa da Quinta da Granja stands on high ground, offering a view over the meandering Nabão River. Its strategic position, in the area of Além da Ribeira and Pedreira, within the district of Santarém, gives it a tranquil and bucolic setting, immersed in the natural landscape of the Tomar region.
The history of Casa da Quinta da Granja dates back to the 16th century, a period of great prosperity for the Order of Christ, which was responsible for its construction. Conceived as a place of refuge and leisure, the estate served as a retreat for its occupants, allowing them to enjoy the serenity of the countryside and the rural environment. Its construction reflects the intrinsic connection to the Order that established it, marking its presence in the territory.
The main building of Casa da Quinta da Granja displays an architecture that harmoniously blends rural features and elements of religious inspiration, typical of the period in which it was built. Its decorative details, although discreet, reveal the attention to detail and the aesthetic taste of the period. In addition to the main house, the complex includes several structures that bear witness to the life and agricultural activities that took place there over the centuries.
Notable among these elements are the dovecote, a remarkably preserved circular structure that highlights the importance of pigeon breeding in the rural economy of the time. The noria, with its elevated platform, is an ingenious testament to the water extraction systems that ensured the irrigation of the land. Further on are the ruins of the olive press, with remnants of an old stone mill, which recall the agricultural production and the processing of the estate's products.
