Located on Rua de São João, in the old medieval town of Ourém, this step is part of the traditional Way of the Cross of the town.
Rectangular structure in plastered and painted masonry, with a gable roof. The façade is marked by a dark wood door, topped by a curved pediment with a stone cross at the top.
Highlighting the central medallion with the symbols of the Passion of Christ, placed in the tympanum of the pediment. The corners of the facade are reinforced by stone pilasters and topped by simple pinnacles.
This small religious building represents one of the moments of Christ's symbolic walk to Calvary. It is part of a set of four small oratories scattered around the town, built for meditation and prayer during Lent.
It is attached to the wall of the current Museum of the Oureana Foundation. The modern building that surrounds it contrasts with the old style of the step, which partially alters its original setting.
Inside, there is a small altar on columns and a vaulted ceiling, with lateral circular openings that function as vents.
It is a must-stop for those who walk through the old town and wish to learn about the religious and heritage traditions of Ourém up close. A good example of Baroque religiosity applied to small-scale spaces, integrated into the urban daily life of the town.
