Located in Nossa Senhora das Misericórdias, in the municipality of Ourém, the pillory is situated in Largo do Pelourinho, next to a viewpoint, in front of the Parish Council and near the Pousada Conde de Ourém.
The pillory was probably built between the end of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, during the reign of D. Manuel I. The date 1620, engraved on its shaft, may refer to a repair or event related to the pillory, and not to its original construction.
This pillory consists of a square base with three steps, from which an octagonal column rises. The column has three rings along its shaft and, at the top, a shield with the arms of the town of Ourém. The finial is decorated with an open crown and a pine cone, both with vegetal ornamentation.
The pillory served as a landmark of judicial authority, used in past times for the execution of sentences and other public acts, being a symbol of local power.
The pillory of Ourém is classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1933, standing out as an important historical and cultural element of the region.
Accessible to the public, the pillory is located in a landscaped area and is a tourist attraction that allows you to appreciate the local history and architecture.
