Located in the community of São João da Ribeira, in the municipality of Rio Maior, this museum is integrated into the area encompassing São João da Ribeira and Ribeira de São João. It is situated within the village, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the surrounding environment.
The origin of this museological space dates back to 1993, driven by members of the São João da Ribeira Dance and Song Group. They began to gather and preserve a diverse collection of objects that bear witness to the rural and domestic daily life of past generations in the region, from farm tools to household utensils and clothing.
The museum is housed in a building that was once an old wine press. This traditional construction, which was in a state of degradation, underwent careful restoration work. Its recovery allowed for the creation of the ideal space to house the collection, maintaining the authenticity of a structure linked to the rural activities of the area.
Inside the museum, visitors are presented with a detailed representation of rural life from bygone eras. The collection is organized into distinct thematic areas: a main room is dedicated to showcasing essential activities such as viticulture, farming, the tradition of pig slaughter, and trades like shoemaking, barbering, or farriery.
There is also a space dedicated to the kitchen, where various utensils used in food preparation and traditional bread making can be observed. The experience is completed with the recreation of a bedroom, showcasing details of domestic life, from the mattress made with corn husks to objects kept in the dresser drawers.
The visit is enriched by the screening of a film that captures the village's memories, its habits and customs, and the traditions that marked life in São João da Ribeira. This visual document also addresses the organization and work behind the creation of the museum itself, offering a vivid perspective of the local heritage.
