The Ourém Municipal Museum is located in the city of Ourém, within the Nossa Senhora da Piedade area. Its main headquarters, the Administrator's House, is situated in a consolidated urban environment, facilitating access for visitors to the locality. The museum is, in reality, a structure with several spaces distributed throughout the municipality, functioning as a cohesive set that explores local heritage at various points of interest.
Inaugurated on July 4, 2009, the Ourém Municipal Museum was conceived as a space for dialogue and reflection on the identity of Ourém and its region. Its approach focuses on the relationship between its collections, the territory in which it is situated, and the population that inhabits it. This perspective allows visitors to understand the cultural and historical richness that has shaped the community over time, through an experience that unfolds across various exhibition nuclei.
The museum's main nucleus, the Administrator's House, is a historically significant building, once the residence of Artur de Oliveira Santos, who was the administrator of the municipality. This location is particularly significant due to its connection to the Apparitions of Fátima, having hosted the children Jacinta, Francisco, and Lúcia between August 13 and 15, 1917. Classified as a Property of Municipal Interest, the space offers exhibitions that invite a journey through the territory of Ourém and its heritage, including a wing dedicated to the history of the Little Shepherds.
The Ourém Municipal Museum extends to the historic Medieval Village, where two other highly valuable nuclei are located. The Ourém Castle and Counts' Palace, for example, is a place where medieval architecture intertwines with crucial moments in Portuguese history. The Count's Palace, in particular, is notable as an exemplary 15th-century artistic piece, reflecting the cosmopolitan perspective of the 4th Count of Ourém, an important figure in Portuguese diplomacy of the time. Additionally, the Medieval Village Gallery is a space dedicated to art, regularly hosting plastic and visual arts exhibitions, lending continuous cultural dynamism to the historic area.
The relevance of the Ourém Municipal Museum in the Portuguese cultural landscape is underscored by its integration into the Portuguese Museum Network. The work developed in safeguarding and disseminating heritage was also distinguished with the Innovation and Creativity Award 2018 by the Portuguese Museology Association (APOM), attesting to the institution's commitment to modern and engaging museological practices.
