Museum of the Sanctuary of Fátima

Category: Civil Architecture > Museum

District: Santarém > Ourém > Fátima

Location:

The Sanctuary of Fátima Museum is located in the Lomba de Égua area, in the town of Fátima, which belongs to the municipality of Ourém. Its central position in the Fátima area makes it an easily accessible point for visitors. It is situated in a setting that reflects the atmosphere of devotion and history characterizing this city.

Context and Purpose

Inaugurated in 1955, the Sanctuary of Fátima Museum was established with the fundamental purpose of preserving and publicizing the history and memory of the singular events of Fátima, as well as the evolution of its sanctuary. It collects, studies, and exhibits a vast collection of objects that serve as material testimonies, spanning from the period of the Apparitions to the present day. Its mission is to unveil the profound relationship between faith, history, and the pilgrims who have shaped this place over the decades.

The Collection and Its Meanings

In its permanent exhibition, titled Light and Peace, the museum invites visitors to reflect on the profound connection between faith and people's lives. The collection is largely composed of ex-votos, offerings of gratitude and devotion left by pilgrims over the decades. These objects, some of humble origin and others from notable figures, including Popes, tell personal and collective stories of hope and gratitude. Each piece testifies to the faith of its donors, creating an emotional narrative about Marian devotion in Fátima.

Among the highlights, the Precious Crown of Our Lady of Fátima stands out for its beauty and symbolism. Considered the most representative jewel in the collection, it incorporates jewels donated by the faithful, reflecting the joys and adversities of humanity that, in Fátima, finds a unique space for its inner pilgrimage. It is a powerful emblem of the union between the giver and the figure to whom the prayer is addressed. It is important to know that on certain days of great celebration, the crown is not exhibited in the museum, as it is used to adorn the venerable image of Our Lady of Fátima on special occasions.

Testimonies of Faith and History

In addition to the ex-votos, the museum houses historical and ethnographic documents, as well as artistic objects that complement the understanding of the Message of Fátima and its development. Notable examples include an 16th-century Indo-Portuguese Christ, the oldest piece in the collection, and the valuable Golden Roses, symbolic offerings bestowed by different Popes upon the Sanctuary. Also, the manuscripts of Sister Lúcia, which record her accounts of the Apparitions, are safeguarded here, offering a unique and intimate perspective on the founding events.
