Situated in the tranquil village of Peral, in the municipality of Alcanena, the Doll Museum is nestled in a serene and welcoming environment. The building that houses it is a former school canteen, whose architecture, characteristic of the Estado Novo period, lends the space a unique atmosphere and a certain traditional charm.
This museum showcases a remarkable collection of dolls and puppets, gathered over several decades by its owner, Rosa Maria Vieira. There are thousands of examples, of distinct shapes, sizes, and materials, inviting visitors on a journey through the universe of these toys.
The permanent exhibition highlights ceramic pieces, many of which are decorative, including delicate miniatures and dolls designed for dollhouses. Larger pieces are also on display, showcasing the evolution of adult appreciation for this type of object. In parallel, temporary exhibitions feature more contemporary dolls, made of fabric, wood, rubber, or plastic, which have been and still are objects of play for children. Marionettes, puppets, articulated dolls, and action figures demonstrate how these objects stimulate children's creativity and emotional development across generations.
The Doll Museum's collection is the result of Rosa Maria Vieira's lifelong dedication and love for toys. Each doll holds a story, a personal memory of the collector, reflecting her persistence in preserving an invaluable heritage. Among the exhibited pieces are items over a century old, serving as a testament to the long history and evolution of these playful and decorative objects. This space is, therefore, a reflection of a passion that has transformed into a cultural asset, shared with all who visit.
In addition to the exhibition areas, the Doll Museum includes spaces that enrich the visitor's experience. A didactic area, with materials related to the collection, encourages the interpretation of concepts of tangible and intangible heritage, making the visit more interactive and educational.
One of the most unique features is the Doll Hospital. In this interactive space, visitors can observe the owner herself carrying out toy restoration. This area not only demonstrates the care and art of recovering objects but also underscores the importance of valuing and preserving heritage, practically communicating the relevance of caring for what connects us to history and memories.
