Located in the Marvila urbanization, in Santarém, the Monument to Celestino Graça occupies a prominent area in this Ribatejo locality. Its presence is striking in the urban landscape, marking a reference point for the city, given its scale and cultural importance.
This venue, in fact, corresponds to Santarém's main bullring, officially named Monumental Celestino Graça. Its name is a tribute to Celestino Graça, an indispensable figure in local history, known for his fundamental role in boosting the Ribatejo Fair. The city's connection to bullfighting is secular, with the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Santarém playing an active role in organizing bullfights since at least the 19th century, perpetuating a deeply rooted tradition in the region.
The architectural design of the bullring was conceived by Pedro Cid, who generously offered the project. Construction began on January 10, 1964, and the official inauguration took place on June 7 of the same year. With a modern style, this arena stands out for its impressive capacity for approximately 13,000 spectators, positioning it as the largest bullring in Portugal. It is classified as a First Category facility, highlighting its relevance in the national bullfighting scene.
Since its opening, the Monument to Celestino Graça has established itself as one of the main venues for bullfights in Portugal. It is a place that continues to host important events, including traditional "Portuguese-style" bullfights, which attract enthusiasts from all over the country. The bullring remains a meeting point for the community and a central hub for bullfighting culture, where a significant part of Ribatejo's traditions is celebrated and kept alive.
