Located in the municipality of Alcanena, the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição (Our Lady of Conception) is situated in the Moitas Venda area, more specifically in Covão do Feto. This location offers a peaceful environment, characteristic of the region's rural landscapes, inviting a moment of pause and reflection.
The history of the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição dates back to ancient times, with possible origins in the 12th century. The edifice we observe today, however, dates from the 16th century, the result of alterations and constructions over time. Its cultural and architectural relevance is recognized, having been classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1996, a testament to its value for local heritage.
On the exterior, the chapel features a strong emphasis on the Manueline style, although it has undergone subsequent modifications that gave it its current appearance. Its gabled pediment stands out, flanked by a square-based tower, which evokes 16th-century aesthetics and integrates harmoniously into the overall construction.
Upon entering the chapel, the visitor is enveloped by the atmosphere of centuries past. The interior walls are partially covered with blue and white tile panels, dating from the 17th century, which once would have covered the entire space. The ceramic decoration extends to the baptistery and the chancel, further enriching its vaulted openings.
On the walls, embedded within the ceramic tiling, there are various paintings with frames resembling "lace". Among the representations, one can contemplate themes such as Our Lady of Conception, the Adoration of the Magi, Our Lady of the Rosary, the Flight into Egypt, the Baptism of Christ, St. John the Baptist, Our Lady of the Mother and of Men, and Saint Mary Magdalene.
In the chancel area, the pavement holds a tombstone of remarkable interest. Visible on the stone, although the epitaph is partially faded, is a lion on the shield, marking the resting place of Lopo Dias Fayn, a nobleman from the King's household, who died in the mid-16th century, and his wife. This detail offers a window into the lives and personalities that marked the region's history.
