The Santarém Municipal Market is located right in the city centre, in the parish of Marvila, near the Courthouse building. This space took over the function of an old open-air market that, for many years, operated in Praça Velha (Old Square), thus consolidating a vital hub for local trade.
Inaugurated in 1930, this market was conceived from an architectural project by Isidoro de Oliveira. Its construction represented a milestone for the city, providing it with a modern and centralised supply structure. Its historical and architectural relevance is recognized, and it is classified as a Building of Public Interest, which underscores its importance in Santarém's cultural heritage.
The architecture of the Santarém Municipal Market features a fusion of styles, with classical and neo-baroque elements that give the building a distinctive look. Inside, a central iron structure stands out, contrasting with the exterior masonry façades. These façades are richly decorated with remarkable figurative tile panels from the former Sacavém Factory. These panels are a true showcase of the region in the early 20th century, depicting themes of rural life, characteristic landscapes, and livestock activities, offering a visual perspective on local culture and history.
Beyond its architectural and historical value, the Santarém Municipal Market remains a vibrant commercial centre. It is where visitors can find a vast selection of fresh food products, directly from local farmers and producers. This environment allows for an authentic immersion into the region's flavours and customs, connecting visitors to the essence of local Santarém production.
