Located in the heart of the city of Santarém, in Alfange, the Teatro Rosa Damasceno occupies a visible and central place in the urban landscape. Its integration into the city's fabric contributes to the cultural dynamism of the surrounding area, marking the presence of an important space for enjoyment for the Santarém community.
Built in 1885, the Teatro Rosa Damasceno underwent a significant renovation in 1938, which largely defined its current architectural identity. Its name pays tribute to the Portuguese actress Rosa Damasceno, perpetuating her memory in the national artistic scene. After a period of inactivity and extensive renovation works, the Teatro Rosa Damasceno reopened to the public in 2021, reclaiming its role in the city's cultural life. The venue currently has a capacity for about 650 to 700 spectators.
The building's architecture presents a fusion of modernist elements with Art Deco aesthetics. The facade stands out for its strong vertical lines and geometric shapes, giving it a distinct presence. Inside, the decoration is meticulous, with elaborate plasterwork and lighting that was considered innovative for its time. The attention to detail is evident in every space.
Since its conception, the Teatro Rosa Damasceno was planned as a multifunctional space, capable of hosting film screenings and theatrical performances. This versatility has contributed to its relevance, establishing it as a cultural landmark in Santarém. The theatre offers the community and visitors various artistic and entertainment experiences, serving as a place for the enjoyment of various cultural expressions.
