The Pillory of Santarém was built in 1506, during the reign of D. Manuel I, reflecting the historical importance of the town at that time.
Only the upper part has been preserved, consisting of a faceted pinnacle with an iron armillary sphere on top.
Initially in the Municipal Square, it was removed in 1834 and damaged. Today it is in a discreet location, near the old Atamarma Gate, a historic entrance to the city.
It has been recognised as a Property of Public Interest since 1933, despite not being well signposted.
A symbol of Santarém's rich past, but currently goes unnoticed, ideal for those who like to explore lesser-known heritage.
