Located in the historic center of Santarém, in the area known as Alfange, this church is integrated into the city's ancient urban fabric. Its position allows for the observation of the integration of religious heritage into the urban landscape, offering a perspective on the history and life of the town.
Originally built in the 13th century, the church underwent significant renovation work in the 16th century following an earthquake, which has shaped its architecture over time. It is a place of worship with a deep history in Portugal, recognized for its uniqueness.
In 1917, it was classified as a National Monument, a recognition that underscores its relevance and value to Portuguese cultural and religious heritage. The temple remains a center of devotion and reflection, inviting the discovery of its spiritual legacy.
The church is especially known for the miraculous event that earned it the name Church of the Most Holy Miracle, which occurred in 1266. The historical account tells of the theft of a consecrated host which, surprisingly, began to bleed and emit light, revealing what had happened.
This phenomenon led to the repentance of the person involved, and since then, the miraculous host has been zealously guarded and venerated in this temple, becoming a central point of its identity and attraction.
The church's structure is a testament to the transition of styles, featuring a harmonious fusion of Renaissance, Mannerist, and Baroque elements that developed throughout its interventions. Its exterior façade is distinguished by a bell tower and a portico which, although simple in design, display an elegance characteristic of the period.
Inside, the space is divided into three naves, highlighted by Mannerist arches and pillars that display careful decoration. The nave walls are enriched with 17th-century tiles, predominantly in shades of blue and yellow, creating a vibrant and traditional setting. Several 17th-century paintings adorn the space, some of which depict scenes alluding to the Eucharistic Miracle, complementing other Renaissance and Mannerist works present.
The chancel holds particular prominence for its paintings, which reveal clear Italian influences and are attributed to João Gonçalves and Manuel Barreto, contributing significantly to the artistic richness and heritage value of the ensemble.
