It is located in Santarém, in the valley between the plateau of the old medieval town and Ribeira, near the Tagus River.
Classified as a National Monument since 1910, it is a rare example of civil Gothic architecture and medieval water supply engineering.
Built in the 14th century, probably during the reign of D. Dinis or D. Afonso IV, with joint participation of the City Council and the King, as evidenced by the coats of arms present on the monument.
It was an essential supply source for the inhabitants of the medieval town, located in a strategic position within the old walls.
It has a square plan, with quoins that support a crenellated porch. It features Gothic arches resting on columns with vegetal details in the capitals, and the ceiling is a ribbed vault.
It connected important points of the medieval town, such as the Atamarma Gate and Ribeira, being a landmark of the history and urbanism of Santarém.
