This garden was conceived on the ruins of the old Castle of Santarém, a fortress that once defended the city. Its name, "Portas do Sol" (Sun Gates), evokes the main gate of the Arab castle, which opened towards the east, towards the sun. As you stroll along the paths, it is possible to glimpse remains of the original wall and other defensive structures that have been integrated into its landscape design. The garden is thus a living testimony to the history of Santarém, blending the robustness of its medieval foundations with the lightness of nature.
