Located in Largo João de Deus, the Jardim da República (Republic Garden) is situated in the center of Chamusca village. It is a central and easily identifiable space, serving as a landmark in the main urban area of the locality.
Its position in the heart of the village invites a pause to appreciate the dynamics of the center and the characteristic urban surroundings.
At the center of the garden stands a Bandstand. This iron structure, dating from the early 20th century, has a picturesque design and is a striking visual element of the space.
In addition to its original function as a stage for musical performances, the bandstand currently houses the music core of the Chamusca Municipal Museum. In this museum space, it is possible to see various instruments and musical scores.
The garden also houses a Monument dedicated to Infante D. Henrique (Prince Henry the Navigator). This symbolic piece represents the form of an ancient padrão (stone pillar), evoking the historical connection to past eras and Portuguese achievements.
The area where the garden is located today has a long history. Formerly, this square was known as Largo de Pelourinho (Pillory Square), a name that refers to the presence of the village's pillory at this exact location, marking its civic importance throughout time.
The garden's layout includes areas with traditional Portuguese pavement, an aesthetic element that contributes to the identity and atmosphere of the village's central space.
