Pombalinho Church

Category: Civil Architecture > Museum

District: Santarém > Golegã > Pombalinho

The Pombalinho Church rises in the heart of the eponymous village, located next to the old route connecting Santarém to Golegã. Surrounded by agricultural fields, the building serves as a landmark in an area of essentially rural characteristics.

The low profile of the settlement and the flat landscape allow the church's white silhouette to stand out against the sky, giving it a clear presence even from a distance.

Historical and Architectural Value

Dating back to 1631, as per the visible inscription above the portal, this church replaced an earlier hermitage destroyed by river floods. Its formal design follows Mannerist lines, with a single nave and a high altar highlighted by a simple frame.

On the façade, the portal framed by carefully carved stonework and the pediment housing a large window stand out. To the right, the bell tower rises discreetly, crowned by pinnacles and adorned with stone panels.

Interior Elements and Atmosphere

The interior preserves an atmosphere of serenity, marked by the wooden windbreak extending to the choir loft. On the north side, the stone pulpit is striking, guiding the way to the main chapel.

The latter houses a set of 17th-century azulejo tiles that partially cover the walls, adding a note of color and texture to the space, where simplicity coexists with details of great artisanal beauty.
