The Church of Nossa Senhora das Neves is located in the village of Brogueira, in the municipality of Torres Novas. It stands on a plateau, in a central point of the settlement, integrated into a spacious churchyard. This surrounding area is paved with cobblestones and tree-lined, creating a tranquil and inviting atmosphere where the village streets converge. The churchyard is delimited by a wall, partly dated 1868, which reinforces the historical character of the place.
This parish church, dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows, is a notable representation of religious architecture that evolved between the 17th and 18th centuries. Its construction likely took place in the 17th century, with indications that the works were already advanced in 1654, a date that can be seen engraved on the pulpit. Over time, the church underwent interventions that added elements of Mannerist and Rococo styles, particularly visible in the portals and the main altarpiece.
The church's main facade, facing west, stands out for its balanced composition, flanked by a prismatic bell tower culminating in a pyramidal spire and pinnacles. An axial portal, adorned with volutes and a mixtilinear pediment, invites entry. On the portal, one can read the crowned inscription: "Nossa Senhora das Neves Veni Coronaberis" (Our Lady of the Snows, Come, You Shall Be Crowned). Laterally to this portal, small 17th-century tile panels depict the images of Saint Sebastian and Saint Martha. A side portal, on the south facade, displays an interrupted triangular pediment, adding to the aesthetic diversity of the ensemble.
Upon entering, the visitor encounters a single nave, covered by a wooden ceiling divided into three longitudinal planes. The choir loft, supported by Tuscan columns, precedes the chancel. The side walls of the nave and, more comprehensively, those of the chancel, are entirely covered with 17th-century patterned tiles, which contribute to the unique atmosphere of the space. On the Epistle side wall, a tile panel from the same period, with a grotesque frame, depicts the patron saint. The chancel is covered by a barrel vault and features a main altar in stonework, reflecting the alterations of the second half of the 18th century. Historically, the church housed several brotherhoods, such as those of the Blessed Sacrament, the Holy Spirit, Our Lady of the Snows, the Rosary, and the Souls, highlighting its vital role in the community.
