The Church of Misericórdia of Constância is harmoniously integrated into the heart of the historic center of the village, in its lowest area. The narrow streets surrounding it and the traditional 18th and 19th-century houses give its surroundings a picturesque atmosphere, typical of a riverside village. The main facade and the right side open onto these thoroughfares, inviting discovery of its heritage.
The history of the Church of Misericórdia dates back to the 16th century, when the Brotherhood of Misericórdia acquired land for its construction. The works, which also included an annexed hospital, extended through the second half of the 17th century. This temple played a notable role in the life of the local community, serving, between 1811 and 1822, as the parish church of the village, due to the destruction of the then parish church during the French Invasions. Its resilience is a testament to its importance throughout the centuries.
Of modest proportions, this church stands as a Mannerist example. Its main facade, marked by a rectangular portal dated 1696, stands out for its symmetry and decorative stonework elements, such as the pilasters flanking the entrance and an upper niche housing the image of the Virgin. A reverse-curved gable gives it a distinct profile. On the side facades, openings can be observed, along with a double bell tower with full arches, adding to the ensemble's uniqueness.
Upon passing through the portal, the visitor encounters an interior that reveals remarkable artistic richness. The nave walls are almost entirely covered with 17th-century tiles with geometric patterns, predominantly in blue and yellow tones, creating a visually appealing atmosphere. Along the nave, six curved-top canvases depicting episodes from the Life of Christ are visible. In the chancel, the main altarpiece in gilded carving of national style stands out, a piece of great artistic value, topped by the coat of arms of D. Pedro II. The semicircular pulpit and a side altarpiece of polychrome carving complement the interior ornamentation, while the coffered ceiling, with large coffers, and the pavement of tomb slabs, add depth and history to the space.
The recognition of its historical and artistic value led to the classification of the Church of Misericórdia of Constância as a Property of Public Interest in 1978. This distinction underlines its relevance in Portuguese cultural heritage, representing a link to the traditions and faith that shaped the village throughout the centuries. The building is today a preserved landmark, accessible to those who wish to explore the heritage of Constância.
