Quinta da Cardiga is located in Golegã, in the heart of Ribatejo. Its history dates back to 1169, when it was donated by King Afonso Henriques to the Knights Templar. After the extinction of this order, it passed to the Order of Christ.
It is one of the most impressive examples of historical architecture in the region, combining different styles. It includes a mansion, barn, chapel, cloisters, and a crenellated tower. Some parts are attributed to the architect João de Castilho.
Since 1952, Quinta da Cardiga has been classified as a Property of Public Interest, highlighting its cultural and historical importance.
For centuries, it was a strategic point for the Templars, along with Almourol Castle and other watchtowers in the region. It even received a visit from Philip II of Spain in 1580.
The Cross of Christ, a symbol associated with the Order of Christ, can still be seen as part of the quinta's identity.
In 2024, Quinta da Cardiga is being transformed into a four-star hotel by the Vila Galé group. The project will include 116 rooms and facilities dedicated to the equestrian universe, reinforcing Golegã's connection to the tradition of horses.
