The Golegã Pillory stands majestically in Largo da Imaculada Conceição, a focal point in the heart of the town's historic center. Its presence marks a prominent spot in Golegã's urban landscape, inviting contemplation of its historical and heritage value.
This monument is entirely built of limestone, featuring a robust octagonal base that rises imposingly. Upon this rests a hexagonal shaft, whose design is representative of the Manueline or late Gothic styles, denoting particular attention to form and ornamental detail.
At its top, the pillory is crowned by a distinctive finial: a cage-like capital, which supports a truncated pyramid. This pyramid, in turn, culminates in a sphere, giving the structure a unique silhouette. An engraving on the shaft attests to a significant intervention that took place in the 19th century, aimed at its maintenance and preservation.
Erected in the 16th century, the Golegã Pillory played a central role in local administration. It symbolized the town's judicial autonomy, serving as the stage for official and judicial acts, and represented the council's power and jurisdiction over its inhabitants.
Today, the pillory transcends its original function to stand as a valuable landmark of Golegã's cultural heritage. Classified as a Property of Public Interest since 1933, it is an eloquent testament to the town's history, preserving the memory of past times and enriching the local identity.
